Bernice “Bunny” Gelberg, 96

PORTLAND – Bernice “Bunny” Gelberg passed away on April 1, 2017 in Portland.

She was born in Portland. ME on May 10, 1920. Her parents, Morton and Hilda Pinckney, are deceased. She graduated from Simmons College in 1939 at the age of 19. Bunny met her future husband, Nat Gelberg, while working in the fur industry. They moved from NYC to the Portland area in 1946 shortly after the birth of their first child, Mike. Three additional children followed – Mark, Holly and Betsey.

Following the death of her husband, Bunny was a substitute teacher in the Portland school system. Later in life, she worked at Sears and MBNA in sales until her retirement at the age of 80. Throughout her life, she was a political activist championing social causes.

Bunny was predeceased by her husband, Nat and son, Mark. She is survived by her sister, Roberta Waldman of Marlborough, MA; son Mike and his wife Terry of Gray, daughter Holly Gelberg and her husband Glenn Thomas of Warren, VT and daughter Betsey Leslie of New Gloucester. She is survived by her grandchildren – David Gelberg and his wife Hollie, Nadine Gelberg and husband Carl, Nathaniel Wolf and his wife Kim and Jenny Wolf and her wife Lauren Macomber Wolf. She is also survived by her great grandson, Matias Wolf, her great granddaughter, Haley Gelberg and several nephews.

Private services will be held at a later date this summer.
