Alice Lewis Obituary

Pownel, ME-Alice L. (Zemla) Lewis passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough, Me.

Alice was born on November 11, 1928, in Portland. She was the daughter of Axel and Christine Zemla, the youngest of seven children. She attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1946. Alice married Carleton Lewis Sr. and together they had three sons.

Alice had a tremendous work ethic. She worked at Big Buy Supermarket in Portland, a stitcher at the LL Bean factory store, from where she retired and later as a housekeeper at Casco Bay Motel in Freeport.

She was a lifetime member of the Payson Park Evangelical Free Church, and she never missed a Sunday, well into her eighties. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Cornerstone Chapter, where she joined on September 28, 1971, The Grange, and a member of the VFW Woman’s Auxiliary.

Alice enjoyed knitting and crocheting. You could always count on her to make a baby sweater set as a gift for any new addition to the family. She enjoyed bean suppers, holiday gatherings with family and yearly trips to New Hampshire with her sister Frances and their grandchildren. She also loved to bowl and was very proud of her high scores and many trophies. Over the years Alice also owned many dogs and cats. Her most recent loves were her Shih Tzu – Chihuahua Gizmo and her cat Shadow.

Alice is the last of her generation of The Zemla Family.

Alice is predeceased by her parents, Axel and Christine Zemla; her husband Carleton Lewis Sr., her sons Carleton Jr. and Kevin Lewis and grandson Nicholas Lewis; daughter in law, Gilda Lewis; granddaughter in law, Kelly Lewis; brothers Richard, Ervin, Kenneth, and Walter Zemla; sisters, Evelyn LaBerge and Frances Swasey. She is survived by her son Michael Lewis; grandsons, Christopher Lewis, with whom she lived, and his partner April Warren; Michael Jr. and Matthew Lewis; great grandchildren Tabatha Sabans, Jessica Mason, and Tyler Lewis; and great great grandson Bentley Mason, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
