Welcome to the memorial page for

Gaye Emma Matthews

April 13, 1950 ~ November 9, 2017 (age 67) 67 Years Old

On November 9, 2017 Gaye Emma Eaton Matthews passed away at her home in Gray.

She was born April 13, 1950 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, a daughter of Gilbert D. and June(Kennett) Eaton. Gaye grew up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and attended Cape Elizabeth schools. She was a 1969 graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School. She attended both Westbrook Junior College and USM and earned a B.A. in both English and History. In 1972 she joined United Airlines as a Flight Attendant and served proudly with them for 46 years. On October 14, 1980 she married William(Biff) Matthews in New York City.

In addition to United Airlines, she was a co-owner of the Recovery zroom restaurant in New York City, and the Gorham Connection in Gorham, Maine. She also ran her own baking company, Emma’s Edibles, which produced pies that were, hand’s down, the best around! During the holiday season, and summer times, she worked for LL Bean as seasonal help. Even during her pregnancy in 1984, she worked at the Paint Pot in Portland, Maine. It’s safe to say she never stopped, and always went above and beyond in everything she did!

To say Gaye was a light in this world would be an understatement; she was a beacon. Bringing equal parts wit, empathy and fairness to all situations, Gaye was a fearless and courageous spirit. Caring and comforting were some of her many strengths and all who ever had the privilege of speaking to her knows that. Whether a stranger in an airport, or a close family member, she put all of her will into every word and action she put forth. Gaye also had a very glamorous streak in her, and could spot a camera a mile away, and manage to strike a perfect pose.In her words, “Anything worth doing is worth over doing…”, and she lived that on a daily basis.

Gardening was a lifelong passion of hers. Spending a day in her yard and getting dirty was special to Gaye.  Gaye could do anything she put her mind to….  Carpentry, wall papering, upholstering furniture, baking, sewing, basket weaving, knitting and so much more.  She found true pride in completing a task.

Gaye leaves behind countless friends around the world. For her family, she leaves behind her husband, Biff Matthews of Gray, and a son, Will of Florida. In addition, a brother, Gilbert(Specs) and wife Grace Eaton of Chebeague Island and sister Vicki and husband Peter Marion of Windham. She also had many nieces and nephews from around the country.

A Memorial service will be held December 2, 2017 at the Portland Club from 1-3. Family and friends are invited to speak beginning at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Shriners Hospital.
