Scarborough- Judy Marilyn Hasey,76, of Scarborough, Maine passed away peacefully on Thursday May 3, 2018. She died of complications from a high risk vascular surgery. Her spirit/attitude remained upbeat. As of that morning, her last text said “ I’m all ready to rock and roll this”. She was born in Greenville, Maine on June 13, 1941, her lucky day Friday, the 13th, to Harry Everett Hasey and Pearl Thompson Hasey.
Judy loved adventure, learning and nature. Skiing, kayaking, MARDENS, biking, hiking – hiked up Mt. Katahdin with her three kids for her 55th birthday, travelling, book club, theatre, music, gardening, family and especially being with ALL her grandchildren, MARDENS aka “Grammy Land”, tubing, sliding, travelling, raising awareness of mother nature when she turned 60 by biking, hiking and kayaking the entire coast of Maine as a fund raiser for Nature Conservancy and did we say MARDENS, were all some of the things Judy loved.
She recently moved to Scarborough after living most of her life in the Winthrop area. Some of the comments people have made about Judy: kind, gentle soul, huge heart, silly, touched my life, amazing, sweet, special, goddess, wonderful, unique, beautiful, a loon, bubbly and dedicated to nature. Mom’s words to live by “When I get old, they’re never going to say,”what a sweet old lady.” They’re gonna say “What on EARTH is she up to now?!”
She spent her youth in Bangor Maine and graduated from Bangor High School in 1959. She got her Bachelor of Education from the University of Maine in 1974. She was the first female on the Bangor City School Board in 1973. She began her teacher career in MSAD 52. She was a beloved teacher for 27 years. She taught first grade as well as being a reading recovery specialist and there was no better way to touch so many lives. During her career she was awarded the Maine Elementary Science Teacher of the year.
Judy spent most of her life married. Her first husband was Fredrick A. Rice whom she had three children with. Her second husband was Roy O. Nisbett, who had four children of his own. She then lived with her companion Ken Kokernack, who’s children she embraced as her own.
She is survived by Frederick M. ( Cathleen Cline) Rice, Heidi R. (Dwayne) Dunn and Amy M. Rice. Her step children Carollee Starkey, Kelly Bushey, Laurie Varnum and David Nisbett and their families. Her beloved grandchildren, Jacob Trickey, Lauren Trickey, Travis Dunn, Tyler Dunn, Freddie Rice and Morgan Reilly. Siblings include Barbara (Tom) Andrews, Richard (Jane Dunnett) Hasey and predeceased brothers Harry (Sylvia) Hasey and David Hasey. There are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives that held a special place in her heart.
