Audrey Burns Obituary

Audrey Todd Burns, 91, passed peacefully at home on March 2nd, 2024 surrounded by her loving children.  A lifelong resident of Gray, she was known to many as a champion of community, volunteerism and education.  Born to Mary (Hill) and Harry Todd, Audrey was raised by her grandmother Mabel Hill and Uncles George and Frank, following her mother’s passing.  Audrey had a happy childhood, growing up near the town center, at camp on Crystal Lake, and visiting her father in Portland.  A graduate of Pennell Institute, she attended Gorham Teachers College where she met her lifelong partner and husband, Gerald Burns.  Together, they taught and counseled many children, in school and out.  Returning to Gray following Jerry’s army assignment in Kentucky, Audrey continued to teach the children of Gray.  She would go on to raise four children and be active in family life as a church member, scout leader and role-model.  Her career ventures also included Editor of the Gray News and co-owner of the Ladyslipper Flower Shop. She would return to the field of education in her retirement, acting as a classroom aide to Russell School kindergarteners.

Audrey will perhaps best be remembered as a dedicated volunteer and advocate for the town she so loved.  Her accomplishments culminated in a Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Town of Gray for extraordinary public service in 2018-2019.  Over the years, she served as a founding member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and The Gray News, member and Chair of the Town Council, member of the School Board, Meals on Wheels driver, and dedicated volunteer for the Gray Food Pantry and Gray Historical Society, to name a few.

Audrey was predeceased by her loving husband, Jerry, in 2004, great-grandson Jaxon, in 2013, and son-in-law, Bryan, in 2020. She is survived by her sister Donna Hilton of Portland, daughter Becky and son-in-law Darrell Lee, daughter Heidi Coron, son Shawn and daughter-in-law Tammy Burns, and daughter Amy and son-in-law George Philbrick, as well as 13 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.  Audrey positively impacted all of their lives and they will live on as her legacy.

The family would like to send sincere thanks to Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice.  The compassion and kindness shown by Paulette and Michelle helped us fulfill Audrey’s wish to be cared for and transition at home.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Gregory’s Church in Gray on Friday, March 8th, at 11 a.m.  Reception to follow in the parish hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Audrey’s name to the Gray Community Food Pantry or the Gray Historical Society.  - Gray Community Food Pantry Congregational Church Parish House 5 Brown St, Gray ME 04039
