Bruce Guion Smith March 1, 1934 – April 17, 2026
Bruce Smith, born in Pleasantville, New York in 1934 to George and Elizabeth Smith, lived a life defined by kindness, integrity, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. He grew up in Pleasantville, attending the local public schools before heading to Penn State University - an experience that shaped both his career and his heart. It was there, at a sorority–fraternity softball game, that he met the love of his life, Lois Piemme. Their partnership, which would span 68 years, began with that chance meeting and grew into a lifetime of shared experiences, family, and steadfast companionship.
Bruce graduated from Penn State in 1956 with a degree in civil engineering and was commissioned through ROTC as an officer in the Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps. Following their graduation, he and Lois married and embarked on their first great adventure together, spending the early years of their marriage in Morocco while Bruce served on assignment with the Navy.
After completing his naval service, Bruce and Lois returned to the United States, where he began what would become a distinguished 32-year career at Chas. H. Sells, Inc. Consulting Engineers. Known for his dedication, fairness, and steady support of those around him, Bruce rose through the ranks to become President before retiring. Along the way, he and Lois raised their five children in Valhalla, NY. Bruce was active in scouting with his sons and supportive of all his kid’s activities.
In 1997, Bruce and Lois embraced a new chapter, retiring to Hilton Head. There, they enjoyed warm weather, year-round golf, and a vibrant community, while continuing their tradition of spending summers in the Poconos. These years were filled with the simple joys they cherished most—time together, family gatherings, travel with their kids and the steady rhythm of a life well earned.
To all who knew him, Bruce was the embodiment of kindness, fairness, and quiet strength. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His presence made others feel supported, heard, and valued.
Bruce was predeceased by his brother, Robin Smith, and by his youngest son, David. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois P. Smith; his sister Suzanne Davis (Charlie) and brother Jan Smith (Nora); his children Kurt Smith (Pat), Mark Smith (Sheila), Steve Smith (Cindy), and Meg Smith (Nancy); nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on in the family he nurtured, the colleagues he mentored, and the countless lives he touched with his gentle steadiness.
Bruce’s life was a testament to love, loyalty, and the quiet power of a good man who moved through the world with grace.
