Danielle Sommer Obituary

Danielle Sommer of New Gloucester, Maine, loving wife and mother, has died. She passed in her sleep at home Saturday February 5, 2022, after a long battle with Chronic Pancreatitis. Danielle was 29.

“Mandi” was Danielle’s name to those who loved her, and is survived by her loving husband, Travis Sommer, her children Raven and Jasper. She is also survived by Travis’ mother, Betty Sommer who cared for Mandi daily and loved her.

Mandi is survived by her parents, Patrick and Tracy Ward of Bowdoin, and by siblings Patrick Preston Ward of Gardiner, Julie Labbay of Durham, and Allie Ward, also of Bowdoin. She is also survived by David Preston Smith of Halifax, NS Canada, her grandfather.

Many members of the Sommer and the Ward Families feel the loss of Mandi, and their number is too large to list. They are acknowledged and loved all the same. She is predeceased also: brother-in-law Joshua Campbell and brother-in-law Tony Campbell II.

Mandi was born December 21, 1992, in Biddeford Maine. She and her sisters entered foster care when Mandi was 6, and ultimately were given to adoptions by different families. Mandi became a foster child with the Wards when she was 8 years old, on February 8, 2000. More than birthdays and other significant dates, this was the day she remembered every year as the day she joined her “Forever Family”.  Mandi was adopted by Patrick and Tracy on November 14, 2006.

In her younger life Mandi was loved by many good people in the community. In her teen years she became a Catholic at All Saints Parish in Brunswick Maine. Fr. Frank Murray (retired) was her priest. Sue and Michael Rubashkin were her God Parents. Michael passed away some years ago. Sue has been a loyal and stalwart advocate, and loving friend to Mandi always.

Mandi attended elementary school at Bowdoin Central School in MSAD 75, then Middle School at Mt. Ararat in Topsham, Maine. Her High School experience was at Chop Point School in Woolwich, Maine. She was an excellent student and friend, and active in sports and martial arts at Riverview Martial Arts in Topsham.

Among the many surviving cousins, aunts, and uncles in her “Forever Family”, Mandi had lasting relationships in Canada and California, as well as in Maine. She was in the prayers of all as she struggled through her health challenges to the very end. Mandi had a special bond with her grandmother Carol Andrew and took her name at the event of her adoption. Carol passed away some time ago. Mandi’s full name is Danielle Carol Mandi Sommer.

As she reached adulthood, Mandi had the privilege of joining into the Sommer Family, and married Travis Sommer of New Gloucester, Maine. Together they gave birth and have nurtured two beautiful children, Raven and Jasper.

Mandi loved to read books. She would read for hours, as content as she could be. She enjoyed many things, including nature and being outside. She loved seeing the flowers and butterflies. She loved to cook and try new things and try to make things that no one has ever seen before.

Mandi had a funny sense of humor and would always try to make you laugh. She loved to make you smile. She is greatly missed.
