Douglas Bowie Obituary

Douglas P. Bowie
New Gloucester, Maine

Douglas “Doug” P. Bowie, 79, passed away peacefully on September 8, surrounded by family, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Lewiston on January 21, 1946, to Leon Bowie Jr. and Dorothy Ford Bowie, Doug was raised in New Gloucester, where he remained deeply rooted throughout his life.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Doug returned home and in 1969. He attended Gray–New Gloucester schools before marrying Linda Bragdon Bowie. Together, they raised two children, Lisa and Craig. Later in life, Doug joined his father in running Bowie Excavating, a company that became not only his livelihood but also his life’s passion. In 1990, his son Craig joined the business, and the two worked side by side for 35 years. His daughter Lisa also worked alongside him for seven of those years. Doug was never happier than when he was “digging dirt” — a trade and calling that defined him.

In 1998, Doug met his life partner, Jody Freeman. Together, they built a life in New Gloucester and treasured weekends at their camp in Magalloway, a place of peace and joy for many years.

Doug is survived by his partner Jody Freeman, her daughter Erica, and their grandchildren Jocelyn, Chase, and Cole; his daughter Lisa M. Bowie and her husband Bill; his son Craig Bowie, and his niece Taylor Morrissette and her son Mason. His grandchildren, Susan Bowie-Wallace (fiancé Devin) and Dustin Wallace, great grandchildren, Mavrick and Mariana. He also leaves behind his siblings: Jackie Wallace; Leona and her husband Michael Bruns; Nelson and his wife Diane Bowie; Chris and his wife Pauline Bowie; and Mark Bowie, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Doug will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his loyalty to family, his gift for nicknames, and his unique  and often quirky character that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In Leiu of flowers, he preferred donations sent to AndWell Hospice center
