Elizabeth Megquier Obituary

Elizabeth Whitney Megquier

Elizabeth Whitney Megquier of Portland, Maine, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Residence and Rehabilitation.  She was born in Gray on March 28, 1918 to Fred and Reina Colley Whitney. She had one brother Orin Whitney.  Elizabeth graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray in 1936.  She married  Lewis L. Megquier in 1937 and they had three daughters and one son.

Elizabeth lived for over 50 years in Freeport, where she owned her own home on Oak Avenue.  After the death of her beloved husband in1971, she worked for many years as a Children’s Librarian for B.H. Bartol Library on Main Street. During her time at the library she attended a week long training at the University of New Hampshire. After her retirement she spent several winters in Florida.  She was a volunteer at the Freeport Community Services Thrift Shop.  She was driving until her 90’s and enjoyed visiting her family.

Elizabeth enjoyed working on projects with her husband when he was alive as he was an avid woodworker. They purchased land on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro in the sixties and they had a cottage built.  She enjoyed gardening and was known for her beautiful flower garden at her home in Freeport.  She was an avid cook celebrating the holidays with her beloved children and grandchildren where she cooked her famous yeast rolls, pies and pecan rolls.  She was a very gracious host always presenting a nice atmosphere for her family members.  She was an excellent seamstress, making her children’s clothes over the years.

Elizabeth will be remembered for her devotion to her family.  She was always interested in hearing about her grands and everything they were doing.  All the family enjoyed their time with her at the cottage.  She so enjoyed watching the grandchildren play in the water and visiting with her adult children.  All the family has wonderful memories of being with “Nana”.  She truly was an awesome mother and grandmother.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Karen Ann Pierce of South Portland, Reina Ava Boudreau of Orrington, Betty de Bree and her husband Bruce of York, SC and her son Rodney Lewis Megquier and his wife Pat of Yarmouth; 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, as well as many other family members. Elizabeth is predeceased by her husband, Lewis; brother Orin and his wife Edna and her parents.

We wish to thank the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s who took excellent care of Elizabeth.  They were with her to the end and we are thankful she was not alone during her passing.  We also thank the staff at hospice for their care.

We will be unable to hold services at this time, but plan to hold a celebration of her life in the Summer for all to attend.
