Eugenia Harrington Obituary

Eugenia P. Harrington

October 8, 1938-July 7, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Eugenia P. “Genie, Mama, Gigi, Babcia” Harrington announces her passing.  Genie died peacefully on July 7th with her daughter by her side, as the sun was rising-her favorite time of the day.

Genie is survived by her daughter Karynlee, son Patrick, and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Nicholas; sister Ellen and husband Tom Lightcap, and many caring friends and family.  Genie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert “Bob” Harrington, in 2018, and her parents, Wilbur Progulske and Rita Miller.

Born in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, Genie graduated from Tech High in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1956.  Genie was creative and a talented artist and used those skills early on as an advertisement designer for a local newspaper.  She then met and married Robert Harrington (a friend of her cousin/ best friend’s husband).   Genie spent the next 20 years being a mom, where she made beautiful clothes for her kids, drove them to 6 a.m. swimming practices, cheered at swim meets and piano recitals, and sacrificed things she may have wanted to do to provide for her family.

Once her kids left for college, Genie and Bob decided to start their own small business, Eugenia’s County Flags.   Genie was the creative master mind and seamstress behind the business.   Her beautiful seasonal and custom flags hang on homes and businesses all over the country.  Genie and Bob were proud to represent the state of Maine for many years at the Big E (Eastern States Exposition) annual fair in West Springfield, Massachusetts.  Genie and Bob spent 55 years together, enjoying traveling, meeting new people, and spending time with their two grandchildren and family on the Cape.

Genie will be remembered by those that loved her for her big heart, her beauty and style (inside and out), her laugh and easy-going spirit, her generosity, her love of life, and her desire to share that with others.   It was infectious.

The family is grateful to all the caregivers who helped in her care over the past 14 months.  A special heartfelt thanks to K2.  You helped me bring her back to life.

A celebration of Genie’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date.

In place of flowers, the family is grateful for any donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, which leads the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, https://www.alz.org/, or to HART of Maine, an adoption center and shelter for cats, https://hartofme.org/
