Geraldine Ann Egan, a devoted mother and a sweet, generous, gentle soul with a mischievous smile passed away on June 29th, 2024 at the age of 89.
Born in 1934 in Portland, Maine, she attended South Portland and Portland Public Schools.
Gerry graduated from Deering High School in 1952 and went on to marry her husband, Robert Egan, in May 1960. Together, they spent 50 wonderful years together. When they retired they enjoyed traveling and spending time in their home with their community of friends in Clearwater, Florida until Robert's passing in 2010. Gerry always said, “My life began when I married Bob.”
Gerry and Bob raised five children: Gerry is survived by her son Robert Egan Jr. and his wife Karen Egan of Gray, Maine; her daughter Maryjane Johnston and her husband Alex Johnston of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; her son Edward Egan Christopher and his husband David Christopher of St. Petersburg, Florida; her son Joseph Egan of Portland, Maine; and her son Kevin Egan and his partner Melissa Savage of Augusta, Maine. They also had six grandchildren: Nathan Egan and his wife Julie; Nicole Chandler and her husband Darrin; Brandon and Joshua Egan; and Zoe and Isabel Johnston.
Gerry spent many years working at the Cape Elizabeth Town Hall, where she was highly respected for her dedication and kindness. She was known for her warm smile and willingness to help those in need. Gerry was an avid knitter who spent countless hours creating hats for newborns and the unhoused. She was also active in her church group. While living in Florida she was a Eucharistic Minister to patients at the Morton Plant hospital. Her philosophy was simple yet profound: look at people with empathy and understanding.
She always said “Be thankful for what you have” and she was.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at The Landing and Scarborough Terrace for their care and compassion during Gerry's stay, as well as Compassus Hospice for their support during her final days.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Bartholomew's Church in Cape Elizabeth on
Saturday, July 13th at 10am. A private burial will follow at a later date at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gerry's memory to The Alzheimer's Association.
