Obituary

POWNAL – John B. Golding, 93, died on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 surrounded by loved ones at Gosnell Hospice .

John was born in Portland, Maine on January 9, 1929 to Lillian M. Smith and William B. Golding. He lived at Town Landing in Falmouth as a young child, where he learned to love the water. As an adult he was known for napping while floating in the sea. Later he moved to a farm on the Tuttle Road, in Pownal and attended Pownal schools. As a teenager he went lobster fishing with his father and older brother. He worked in the woods and for a short time at Freeport Shoe Company.

In December 1947 he married Anna B. Thoits from Yarmouth, Maine. They lived in Freeport for 2 years and then moved to Pownal, they soon moved to Yarmouth and John worked for H. L. Porter trucking telephone poles out of Yarmouth pole yard to distribute around the state. Later the company was sold to Koppers Co. from Penn. Afterward he bought a farm on Libby Road in Pownal which burned in October 1967. While living in Freeport John started lobstering with his brother and later clammed until he was 69 years old. Retiring he built a house in Pownal where he lived until 93. He filled retirement hours with gardening, pet chickens, bird watching, relaxing in a pool or sitting on the porch. John became a widower after celebrating 70 one years of marriage.

John was committed to hunting with his son, grandsons and friends. He was devoted to the needs of the family. His devotion to family was returned to him as he navigated his last days with us. He will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Nurse Kelly of Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home Care for several months of guidance and personal compassion to John and his children during a difficult time. With her assistance John was moved to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for his final hours of continued heartfelt care.
