Judith A. (Unas) Witkop, 84, of New Gloucester, died December 17, surrounded by loving family. Born on June 2, 1937 in Hartford, CT, she was the daughter of Leon P. Unas and Anne (Weissbach) Unas. She grew up in Somersville, CT, and graduated from Rockville High School in 1954. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Southern Maine in Gorham and worked at the Shaker Museum in Gray for many years. She lived in Hampden, MA before moving to New Gloucester in 1988.
Judith was a member of the New Gloucester Historical Society and was named a Trustee Emeritus and Honorary Life Member in 2019. She also enjoyed the quilting club at the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester and had many friends in both groups.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Stanley and Tammy Witkop, Stephen and Kathy Witkop, Christine and David Crombie, Lisa and Greg Burt all of Massachusetts, and Peter Witkop and his partner, Amy Scrutchfield of New Gloucester. She was predeceased by her son, Bruce Witkop. She has 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Gloucester Historical Society, PO Box 531 New Gloucester, ME.
