June O'Donnell Obituary

June S O'Donnell of Gray passed peacefully on March 24, 2022 at Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn Maine.  She was born in Newark NJ April 14, 1931 to Frank M & Emily Middlesworth, who moved to Gray themselves in 1970.

Growing up in Irvington, NJ after high school, June went to Hospital of St. Barnabas School of Nursing in New Jersey graduating in 1952.  She then moved to Boston, working at the Deaconess Hospital and marrying Francis O'Donnell in 1962.  Francis & June then moved to & traveled through Germany/Europe where Francis taught school at US Army Garrison Baumholder, returning to Boston in 1964 and subsequently moving to Gray in 1966.

Other than a brief time in the early 70's working as a real estate agent with Shamrock Realty in Portland, June's entire career was spent in nursing/nursing related work.  She worked at Central Maine General Hospital and South Portland Nursing Home but most of her work life was spent in State service working at Pineland Center and then the Bureau of Labor Standards until retiring with over 20 years of dedicated service to the State of Maine.

June loved her gardens, loved travel and was a dedicated Anglophile.  Her fondness for the time she spent in Europe particularly England was well known by all.  In 2003, June was finally able to take her dream trip when she was able to spend 10 days in England and then sail home on QEII.

During June's over 50 years in Gray, she was very active in the Gray Public Library, the original Gray News, Not Your Mother's Garden Club, the Maine Wildlife Park and the Gray Historical Society where she was a lifetime member as where her parents.  She was also a member of the UMaine Cooperative Extension in Gray serving for over 20 years in multiple roles and was the recipient of their Homemaker of the Year award.

June was an only child but there were many 1st cousins she always considered to be more like brothers & sisters to her growing up.  Sadly, June was the last of those cousins.

June is survived by her daughters, Kara O'Donnell and her partner Michael Burbank of Auburn and Amy O'Donnell and her husband Timothy Schner of Durham North Carolina; her granddaughter Alexandra Wilcox of Gray and her great grandsons Calvin & Keenan Keith, also of Gray.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 13th from 4 - 6 pm at Wilson's Funeral Home in Gray.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Gray Public Library, The Gray Historical Society, the Friends of the Wildlife Park or your local food pantry.
