Mark Francis Bastey, US Army Major (retired), 76, of Freeport, peacefully passed away on May 15, 2024 surrounded by loved ones at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.
Mark was born to John and Mary Bastey on August 11th, 1947, in Roswell, New Mexico. He graduated from Bangor High School and the University of Maine at Orono. While at the University, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Student Commander of the ROTC and graduated in 1969. He served our Country in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart and was also awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and 2 Bronze Stars.
After Vietnam, he met Jane, the love of his life and they were married on September 8th, 1973. They had 2 daughters, Jessica and Catherine. He was a Man of God and credited his strong faith for getting him thru Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, Mark worked for the Maine Department of Labor as a Veteran’s Counselor.
His hobbies included volunteering at the Togus VA Hospital in Augusta, wood working, fishing, camping, making pickles and being a loyal Red Sox and Patriots Fan. Back in the day, he would listen to the AM radio (static and all) to all of the games and loudly cheer for his teams.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Jessica and Catherine; grandchildren, Ivan and Alexis (Lexi); brothers, John, Jim and Robert, and many other family members and friends. The family would especially like to thank the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for their loving care as well as the camaraderie of his fellow veterans- it meant so much.
Mass will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Freeport, Maine on Wednesday, May 29th at 1PM. Mark will be laid to rest at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Springvale, Maine at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compassus Hospice in Scarborough, Maine. www.compassus.com.
