Michael Stash

It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Stash announces his passing on August 11, 2025. Michael, aged 62, passed away unexpectedly in his home in New Gloucester. Michael was born on October 18, 1962 in Pittsburgh to George and Ilona Stash. Michael grew up in Bethel Park among many friends.

Michael was an enlisted sailor, ranking E4, in the United States Navy for 6 years, with a primary MOS of intel during his service in the Gulf War aboard the U.S.S. America. Michael was rewarded 9 medals for his service.

He was married to Michelle for 28 years and they raised three wonderful children together.

Michael dedicated his life to teaching and empowering young people at the Gray-New Gloucester Middle School. Graduating from the teaching program at USM in Gorham in 1996, he taught for 29 years. His students were his passion and he retired in 2025. Michael touched the lives of many young people through his devotion to teaching. Michael’s sense of childlike wonder and awe, as well as his fun imagination always engaged and interested students in what they were learning.

Michael was a loving father to both human and fur babies, a loyal and compassionate friend to many, a proud veteran, a skilled fisherman, and a talented cook. He was a lover of nature, poetry, games, music, animals, food, the cosmos and, above all, his friends and family.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, George Stash Jr.  Michael is survived by his children James, AJ and Daniel; mother Ilona; siblings Sharon and Melissa (Dean); nephew Jason; girlfriend Tia; beloved dogs Cocoa and Bella; many cousins, family and friends.

A military service with close friends and immediate family will be held at the Gloucester Hill cemetery. There will also be a public Celebration of Life. The dates for both are yet to be determined.
