Richard “Dick” Burton Reid was one of four children born to Aubrey and Isabel Reid on May 24, 1934 in Madison, Maine. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, his daughters Donna Wilkinson and Cindy McLean, his granddaughters Sadie Rioux and Aubrey Wilkinson, his great-grandchildren Jalyn, Gage, and Maxwell Rioux, and his beloved dog Chica.
Richard graduated from Madison High School where he earned his nickname “Sleepy” while playing quarterback on the football team. In 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley. From Madison they moved to New Jersey before finally settling down in their home in Gray, where the Dry Mills neighborhood became his life long friends. During those years he helped develop the Gray Youth Club for the community with baseball fields, an ice skating rink, street dances, parades, and Gray Old Home Days festival.
Dick worked for many years in the auto body business before starting his own company. Though he was very proud of his Gray Auto Body and Wrecker Service, his family was his life’s greatest achievement.
Dick adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren more than anything in the world. In his eyes, they were perfect in every way. He never missed any of their special events, no matter the obstacles he faced toward the end. He spoiled them rotten!
Dick loved his family vacations to Deer Isle and Florida, his “mystery” rides, and antique cars. He will forever be remembered for his humor, generosity, compassion, and imaginative stories. He kept everyone laughing until the very end. We know he’s probably waiting for us now saying, “I’ll be in the car revving the engine!”
