Robert Smith Obituary

Robert M Smith
On November 9 th , 2022, loving husband and father passed away peacefully at his home at the age
of 85 from natural causes.
Robert “Bob” was born on December 29 th , 1936, in Farmington, ME to J. Merle and Evelyn
Smith.
Bob grew up in Wilton, ME and was in the graduating class of 1955 from Wilton Academy.
His curiosity for building and rebuilding things inspired him to earn a degree in Aeronautical
Engineering at Boston University in 1959. He spent his early work years as a test flight engineer
and later years focused on the early development of CAD/CAM engineering systems in Southern
Maine.
On June 6th, 1959, he married Carole Hanson from Gray, ME. The two met while attending
school in Boston and would go on to celebrate 62 wedding anniversaries and raise 3 sons,
Gregory, David, and Stephen.
Bob was known for his skills as a craftsman and woodworker, and a man who loved his hobbies,
building HO train sets, RC planes, and restoring automobiles.
As a longstanding member of the Skystreakers RC club in New Gloucester, ME., Bob became an
accomplished builder and pilot of model airplanes which led to the display of many trophies in
his workshop from flying competitions throughout New England.
When not flying planes, he could be found in the garage restoring old cars. Some of his proudest
work was the restoration of a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible and a 1947 Ford Coupe convertible
that was acquired by the Owle’s Head Transportation Museum.
When time permitted, he also enjoyed skiing with his family and was a proud member of the
National Ski Patrol.
In retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling the countryside with his wife Carole in their motorhome
and spending the winter months at their second home in Frostproof, FL., where golf and making
clubs for friends became new hobbies in later years.
Bob was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor and one-line zingers that would always
make people smile.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents J. Merle and Evelyn and son Gregory. He is survived
by his wife Carole, 2 sons; David and Stephen, 2 daughters-in-law’s; Jacquelyn and Jennifer, and
4 grandchildren; Hunter, Connor, Austin, and Brett.
