Roy Foster Sr. Obituary

New Gloucester- Roy E. Foster Sr,  91, passed away peacefully in his home after a brief illness with family beside him.

Roy was born February 9th,1935 in Portland, the son of Arthur and Cora Foster. He was one of five children growing up in Falmouth, where he attended area schools. In high school, is where he found his love of basketball and talked of it his entire life with great joy.

After high school Roy enlisted in the US Navy, where he served our country for four years. He always talked of the experience it gave him traveling the world and was proud of his time served.

Roy married the love of his life Gladys (Miller) from Waldoboro on September 27th 1974. They had met at a country dance hall in Standish at one of their favorite local spots they nicknamed "hog hollow". From there they started their life together living in Gray for many years until they moved to New Gloucester in 2002.

In Roy's early years, he owned a cleaning company with his cousin, where he worked tirelessly for his family. He and his cousin later opened a bicycle repair shop in Portland where they sold and repaired Schwinn products. After that Roy decided to open a bicycle shop of his own named Twin City Cyclery in Lewiston where he would enjoy visits from his regulars and his children would frequent when he was there.

In retirement, Roy enjoyed working part time for True Value and then driving for Dunn's Auto repair delivering parts to other local businesses when not sitting at the Cole Farms counter chatting with others.

Roy's greatest joy was his family. He was the true definition of a patriarch. All looked to him for comfort, support and guidance. His love always endured and he always wanted to make sure his family was safe and supported. It was a great honor to Roy that his namesake carried for three generations. First, his first-born son, then a grandson, and now a great-grandson. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Being called Grandpa was his greatest gift. He was always the first to call on a birthday and always showed up to support them in all they did. Whether it be a sporting event, a play, or just being excited with a successful hunt, he was there.

Roy is survived by his wife Gladys, his brother, Stephen "Butch" and wife Barbara, son Roy "Skip" Jr and wife Kym, daughter Teresa Bonney and her husband Sean, Son Chris and his wife Sarah along with all his loving grandchildren, Roy foster III, Joel and his wife Glenna, Dan and his wife Audrey, Sara Moses and her husband Kenny, Christopher and Jameson. He is also survived by his 3 great-grandchildren.

On behalf of the family. A special Thank You to the staff at Beacon Hospice, who came in very promptly and compassionately for Roy's final hours.

Per Roy's wishes there will be no service at this time.
