Theordore Pierce Obituary

Theodore Richard Pierce

1938-2022

Gray- Theodore Richard Pierce of Gray passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the age of 83.  Ted passed peacefully at Mercy Hospital with family by his side.

Theodore (many knew him as Ted or Teddy when he was younger) was born on September 12, 1938 in South Windham.  He attended the local schools in Windham and graduated from Windham High School in 1957.  Ted went on to attend the General Electric Apprentice Program in Lynn, MA.  He worked the majority of his years as a pipefitter at SD Warren Mill in Westbrook.  He also worked alongside Peter Tubbs in Windham.  Ted enjoyed his plumbing and pipefitting profession and was always willing to help family and friends with their plumbing needs.  After retiring from the mill, he went on to drive school bus for the Gray and later Falmouth schools.

In 1962, Ted married Ruth Doughty, and they went on to live for a short time in Massachusetts, where he apprenticed and worked for GE.  Upon returning to Maine, Ted and Ruth renovated an old house next to Ruth’s parents and they continued to live on Yarmouth Road until 1986, when they built a log home on the site of an old family camp on Little Sebago Lake in Gray.

Ted had a wonderful life, filled with family and activities.   He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling for many years. Ted was a hard worker and liked being outdoors.  He maintained a huge garden for many years- enlisting Ruth and his girls for help with weeding and picking vegetables.  When the girls were young, he and Ruth spent many hours square dancing with the F&G Squares Club.  Later in life, Ted and Ruth started camping with friends and brought the grandkids along for many of those adventures.  They also took several trips to the mid-west and the west coast with their camper.

Ted was actively involved at the Congregational Church in Gray.  He was a deacon and a Trustee for many years and cooked hundreds of chicken halves for the annual chicken barbecue each August.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife Ruth (Doughty) Pierce, his father Richard D. Pierce, his mother Ruth (Strout) Pierce, and his 7 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughters, Joanne McDonald and Jennifer Ziegra, his sons-in-law Darrel McDonald and Jonathan Ziegra; his grandchildren Crystal and her husband Joe, Craig and his fiancé Jess, Carolyn and her fiancé Abbey, and Heidi and her husband Kyle; his great-grandchildren; cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Ted will be held later in 2022.
